Fluid Conductors Part 3: Flexible Hose

This is part 3 of 3 about fluid conductors. Parts 1 and 2 were covered in the two previous newsletters. Hydraulic hoses are not a minor component in the hydraulic system.   • Measured on the inside diameter.
  • Is a nominal measurement.
  • The “lay line” on the hose will identify the specifications and help the installer prevent twists or kinks.
  • Hoses actually get shorter when pressurized, so always allow for this during installation.
  • Hoses expand under pressure. A lot of hoses often make hydraulic systems seem like the oil is “compressible.”
  • Sizes indicate the number of 16ths of an inch, such as #8 hose is 8/16″ or ½” ID.
  • Hose is made up of three parts; liner, reinforcing layers, and cover.
  • The liner and cover must be compatible with the type of fluid being used.
  • High pressure hoses may not be used as a suction line. Suction line must have the liner glued to the reinforcing layers.
  • Corners are made by bending (obviously) or with angled fittings. REMEMBER: Anytime fluid travels around a corner, it increases the pressure drop.
  • Hose and fittings include any type preferred. These include tapered pipe, flare, o-ring, but no compression ferrule type.
  • Some hose-end fittings are reusable. These will typically have a hexagon shaped sleeve so it can be turned with a wrench.
  • Using the wrong fitting on the wrong hose will cause leaks and liability. Always get advice from the hose and fitting manufacturer in order to do it right!

When using off-line filtration, the fluid will need to pass through the filters on the filter cart approximately seven times to achieve single pass filtration. Use the following formula to calculate the amount of time needed to achieve single pass filtration.

(Reservoir size x 7) / Flow rate = Time*

For example, if you have a 50 gallon reservoir, the flow rate of your pump is 10 gpm, it will take approximately 35* minutes to achieve single pass filtration.

*Times will vary depending on initial cleanliness of oil, system ingression, choice of media grades and other variables. However, for a reference guide, this formula can be used successfully.

Tank Mounted Strainers: Does it make sense for your suction line straining?

We all know the importance of straining the hydraulic fluid before it reaches the pump. We realize the pump is the most important component in the system because if it fails, the entire system fails. Sometimes it is not convenient to remove the suction strainer that is located inside a reservoir. The option then would be to install a tank mounted strainer from the outside of the reservoir.

The tank mounted strainer is inserted in a hole from outside the reservoir at the bottom. That way, when the reservoir has been drained, merely unthread the strainer and thread a new one in without going inside the reservoir. Simply done. OFCO manufactures tank mounted strainers that will handle 3 gpm to as large as one that will handle 100 gpm.
